Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so entertaining that they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:

Q:  What was the first video to be played on MTV?

A:  The first video was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles, played when MTV first aired at 12.01 AM on August 1st, 1981.

Video Killed the Radio Star was also MTV’s millionth video, aired on February 27, 2000, and is also the third most-aired video in MTV history! The first most-played is Peter Gabriel‘s “Sledgehammer.” The video was around at just the right moment to launch the first television station devoted entirely to pop music.The single had actually reached No. 1 on the British charts but only climbed to No. 40 on the U.S. charts when it was first released in 1979.

The video itself, with its quirky and “futuristic” elements was directed by Russell Mulcahy. It cost only $50,000 to produce and shooting took one day. Mulcahy went on to direct some famous music videos for Duran Duran, Elton John, Billy Joel, and dozens of other bands. He then went on to directing the cult classic movie “Highlander” and more recently “Resident Evil: Extinction.”

So what happened to the two musicians who had formed the Buggles? Apparently, they had actually disbanded the group before the video even made it to MTV! Geoff Downes went on to help form the group Asia, which became another staple of early MTV. Trevor Horn became a successful producer for such artists as Tina Turner, Faith Hill and the Spice Girls.
