Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so intriguing, they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:
Q: Is President Obama going to cut back summer vacation?
A: He’s contemplating it. Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.
Know more:
President Obama feels the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom for America’s schoolchildren. He proposes that schools have longer classes, stay open late during the week, and be open on weekends.
Education experts feel that the traditional school year is outdated, as it was originally based on an agrarian economy. As few kids work in the fields anymore, the current school calendar smacks as being antiquated.
Simply put, Obama and federal education experts think American children need more school because kids in other nations have more school.
Research suggests that if we are to improve our math scores, the key is to add more time to the class, not more days to the year. Experts suggest that math instruction in a 45 minute period is not enough.
American kids put in more time overall
Kids in the U.S. spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the U.S. on math and science tests — Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the U.S. (180 days). Go figure.
“We know that education is everything to our children’s future. We know that they will no longer just compete for good jobs with children from Indiana, but children from India and China and all over the world.” ~~ Barack Obama
