kgb_ Special Agents are tireless and relentless in their search for the answers to America’s questions.  And what does America want to know, you ask?  Well, today’s buzz centers on a trend among some Japanese clubbers – bagelhead chic.

What’s a bagelhead?

Check out photos of bagelheads here.

Know more:

A somewhat disturbing “beauty” fad has emerged in Tokyo’s club set.  Individuals are being injected with ample quantities of saline in a solution drip which results in disfigurement of the head.  The injected folks are referred  to as “Bagel Heads” or simply bagelheads. Professional piercers typically introduce the injections.

The disfigurement is not permanent and the resulting weird shapes on the forehead last about 24 hours.  Artistic-type bagelheads accent the bumps with food coloring and mold the bumps into different shapes.

Saline recipients commonly refer to the practice as “inflating.” Side effects may include headaches and infection.

kgb_ Text of the Day: Is playing video games too much an addiction?

video game night, invasion from space #1

Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so time-consuming, they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:

Q: Is playing video games too much an addiction?
A: The AMA doesn’t consider it to be a legitimate disorder, but one Swedish study claims that World of Warcraft can be “more addictive than crack cocaine.”

Know more:

An addiction treatment center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, assists those seeking to break their video game dependence.  Think of it as WoW detox.

Addiction experts in the United States are taking notice.  Some suggest that it is an addiction similar to compulsive gambling – a clinical impulse control disorder.  Addictive behaviors are similar to addictive substances: A person needs more and more to keep them going and become irritable and miserable when they don’t get enough.

However, the biological basis to video game addiction is uncertain.  Research suggests that gambling elevates levels of dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter in the brain.  Gaming addiction may have a similar basis but it is unclear.

What may be clear however is the fact, for some, a virtual life is more appealing than an actual one.  Experts suggest that young teens who play 4-5 hours a day get robbed of normal social development and that older addicts jeopardize jobs and relationships.

Dr. Richard Graham, a U.K. psychiatrist, wants to begin offering treatment to kids addicted to World of Warcraft from within the game itself and hopes to get the program rolling by the end of the year.

kgb_ Text of the Day: How does lightning come indoors?

Lightning over Pentagon City in Arlington, Vir...

Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so electrifying, they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:

Q: How does lightning come indoors?
A: The 3 main ways lightning enters buildings: A direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure & through the ground.

Know more:

While lightning can enter a house in a number of ways, once it is inside it tends to travel through the electrical, telephone, plumbing and radio and television systems.  It can also travel through any kind of metal wires in concrete.

Phone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injury in the U.S. Washers and dryers are indoor lightning troublemakers as well.

Unfortunately, property inside the home is not protected by typical surge protectors when lightning is involved. It is always best to unplug appliances well before a thunderstorm approaches.

Stay off corded phones. Fortunately, cellular and cordless phone use is safe during thunderstorms. Avoid plumbing, hand washing, showers and washing dishes during thunderstorms. Steer clear of windows, doors, and stay off porches.

kgb and Penn State University Blue & White Game

Monday, April 27th, 2009

On Saturday, several kgb Special Agents and their extremely cool Squad Cars made an appearance at the Penn State Blue & White game. With 6 of the cars, kgb agents  made the trip to State College, Pennsylvania arriving on Saturday. There were likely over 100,000 people tail-gating and 76,000 at the game itself, but kgb was the center of attention, answering every question Penn State could throw at us.

kgb Agents– Tuscaloosa to Panama City

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Oh I come from Alabamy with a banjo on my knee.

Well, not quite.

Special Agent Damschroder here. Today was a day of twists and turns. We began the day in Tuscaloosa, AL, packing up out squad cars to head south to Florida for Spring Break. As we put our keys in the ignitions, we got a call from the local television station saying that they’d like to do a story on us. Off we sped to the University of Alabama to meet with the news team. After a couple victory laps and an interview, we headed out for Panama City Beach, Fl. We’ll be in Panama City Beach for most of the week, so come say hello and get yourself a special KGB T-shirt!

kgb On the Way to Tuscaloosa

Special Agent Jame:
On the road again….deep in the heart of M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I. Well, actually–to be honest it was through Texas, Louisanna (Hello again LA!), Mississippi, and then Alabama! The second state in alphabetical order. Booyah! We’ve arrived in ALABAMA!
It was a ten hour drive and our carvan was split up and hot on the trail of competition. Who would be first to arrive in Tuscaloosa Alabama? I’ll allow Agent Taylor aka Agent Swamp Rat to indulge further.
I was more interested with the roadkill we encountered beside the road and with the state troopers that pulled over a total of four people in the state of Mississippi alone!

What’s the average mph OVER the speed limit do most drivers go on the highway? Text it up road warriors. 542 542
We’ll catch you in Tuscaloosa tomorrow.
