Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so entertaining that they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:

Q:  What was the first video to be played on MTV?

A:  The first video was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles, played when MTV first aired at 12.01 AM on August 1st, 1981.

Know more:

Video Killed the Radio Star was also MTV’s millionth video, aired on February 27, 2000, and is also the third most-aired video in MTV history! The first most-played is Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.” The video was around at just the right moment to launch the first television station devoted entirely to pop music. The single had actually reached No. 1 on the British charts but only climbed to No. 40 on the U.S. charts when it was first released in 1979.

The video itself, with its quirky and “futuristic” elements was directed by Russell Mulcahy. It cost only $50,000 to produce and shooting took one day. Mulcahy went on to direct some famous music videos for Duran Duran, Elton John, Billy Joel, and dozens of other bands. He then went on to directing the cult classic movie “Highlander” and more recently “Resident Evil: Extinction.”

So what happened to the two musicians who had formed the Buggles? Apparently, they had actually disbanded the group before the video even made it to MTV! Geoff Downes went on to help form the group Asia, which became another staple of early MTV. Trevor Horn became a successful producer for such artists as Tina Turner, Faith Hill and the Spice Girls.

Often, our Special Agents answer questions that are so timely that they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:

Q:  So what is Cinco de Mayo anyway?
A:  May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.

The scoop:

Cinco de Mayo serves as an important date for the Mexican and Chicano communities.  It marks the victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  This battles distinguishes itself as a symbol of Mexican patriotism and unity.

In actuality, Mexican independence occurred about 50 years later in 1910, but Cinco de Mayo continues to serve as that symbol of freedom.

Cinco de Mayo is more heavily celebrated in the United States than in Mexico.  Parades, mariachi music, folklore dancing and other activities are common.

As might be expected, in the face of swine flu, Cinco de Mayo celebrations are expected to be more subdued this year.

Today’s Fact of the Day is a great fact from  Pennsylvania:

Q: Why is Beaver Stadium so-called?

A: Beaver Stadium is named for James A. Beaver, a former governor of Pennsylvania (1887–91) and president of the university’s board of trustees.

More details:

Beaver Stadium has a capacity of 107,282, making it the second-largest stadium in the United States and the third largest stadium in the world.  Beaver Stadium’s record crowd of 110,753 witnessed Penn State’s 40–7 victory over Nebraska on September 14, 2002.  In 2002, Penn State also set an NCAA record for largest season attendance, with 1,257,707 watching Penn State games over the course of the season.[5]

It is boasted by the Penn State community that during home games at State College the stadium is the 3rd largest city by “population” in the state. It follows Philadelphia (1,517,550) and Pittsburgh (334,563) and precedes Allentown (106,632).

kgb’s own Smart Car’s and Special Agents will be making a special appearance at the Penn State Blue & White game this Saturday.  So come on over to us (near the baseball stadium), say hi and get a free kgb T-shirt!

kgb says Say Cheese! in Dallas

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Or should I say Tex Mex cheese! And what better place to have a Queso Chugging contest than in Dallas, Texas. In the early morning hours, Special Agents Erik, Lili, Chris and I, ventured to Manny’s Tex Mex House to host a Queso Chugging contest. It was awesome! We had four contestants sitting around a table chugging as much Tex Mex cheese as they could in two minutes.

OMG! I don’t know how they did it, but once the clock started, they all started slurping! It was so funny! Contestant Ben #1 took one slurp of cheese a gagged…he was done! The cheese was just too thick and spicy for him to continue. Then, there were Contestants Homero and Omar. They put up a good fight finishing two huge bowls of queso dip. But my cowboy hats go off to our Queso Chugging Grand Prize, Contestant Ben #2. He finished a whopping four bowls of queso dip! Wow! He had it in his mind that eating as much queso dip as he could in two minutes was totally worth the $500 cash prize. And even though we had a garbage can next to all the contestants, luckily, the queso stayed down.

It was an awesome event. The entire staff at Manny’s stood around cheering on the contestants. We discovered Manny’s by texting a question to 542-542, and asking, “Who has the best Tex Mex Queso Dip in Dallas?” They were super happy to know that Manny’s absolutely served the best, and I think our contestants would agree.

Thanks for coming out, and making this kgb 542542 Stunt Event a huge success! Til next, keep it cheesy!

Signing off,
