At times, our Special Agents answer questions that are so horticultural, they are inclined to do further research. So here is our Agents choice for question of the day:
Q: Do Bonsai trees go indoors or outdoors?
A: You’ll probably get better results if you let your Bonsai thrive outside rather than inside. Bonsai are still trees & need outdoor living conditions.
Know more:
The Japanese word “bonsai” translates to “tray planting” in English. The centuries old tradition remains strong today and bonsai aficionados take great pride in their horticultural “art.”
Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into appealing shapes. This popular horticultural practice involves growing, pruning and training the trees in containers using specific techniques.
In bonsai, if you let nature take its course, you end up with something that looks nothing like a tree at all.
While some claim that bonsai is 90% art and 10% horticulture, a successful bonsai is a horticultural masterpiece for sure.
Most bonsai range in height from 2 inches to 3 feet. The plants are kept small and trained by pruning, periodic re-potting, pinching off new growth, and wiring branches and trunk so they grow in the desired shape.
Tradition holds that three basic virtues are necessary to create a bonsai: shin-zen-bi standing for truth, goodness and beauty. Given proper care, bonsai can live for hundreds of years, with prized specimens being passed from generation to generation, admired for their age, and revered as a reminder of those who have cared for them over the centuries.
It is not what we do to these plants that is important, but what they do to us….Even you and I can find a greater measure of faith, courage, and understanding living and growing with bonsai. ~Claude Chidamian
